Beyond Sight Library
CONCEPT:
'Beyond Sight' is an innovative braille library and tactile exhibition space intended to provide people with visual impairments with an individualized, sensory-rich experience. This library mainly targets an audience with visual impairments, not limited only to blindness, through the integration of music, art, and education. It empowers, promotes literacy, and inspires creativity. Its design takes inspiration from the play of light, shadow, and reflections, incorporating sustainability, a variety of textures and colors, in addition to multiple wayfinding guides to support intuitive and independent navigation throughout the space.

Research Statement:
Reading advocates possibilities and exposure to parallel worlds and viewpoints that go beyond the confines of our own experiences. Libraries bridge the gap between the mind and the knowledge the world has to offer, providing access to the data required for active awareness in society.
Globally, there are about 2.8 million libraries, few of which offer braille books and resources. However, due to the integration of braille services into larger institutions, spaces dedicated exclusively for people with visual impairments are scarce, therefore limiting resources and accessibility. 'Beyond Sight' is a space for those who navigate the world through senses rather than sight. Helen Keller once said, “The only thing worse than being blind is having sight but no vision.” This library personifies the above idea by offering visually impaired individuals a space where vision is defined by imagination, knowledge, and community in ways that go beyond sight.
